This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for long-term couples who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like standard body horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about our choices in loving each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.

The plot commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for Millie’s job. A familiar story element, sure, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

A Paranormal Spark

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence starts to affect the duo. This force compels a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building fright fest, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) body horror, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Michael Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and presents them in a consistently growing sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a distance. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the idea of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move in this movie avoids making either of his characters the obvious villain.

Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in long-term unions a decade in. At their core, they have affection for each other. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these concerns of unhealthy attachment and fully committing to another person, the metaphor does not come across as overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own reaction could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
