"When are you chatting with the Haim sisters?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There is only a single issue: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. And we're in plentiful company. Multiple high-profile admirers have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career doing sets at neighborhood delis with their parents. Today, they are multiple Grammy contenders.

In the tradition of the best groups, they're a close unit. Their visuals repeatedly show them striding in sync down the roads of Los Angeles. On stage, they perform with such boundless joy you can't help but think, "I want to be a piece of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that young girls told us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "It is the ultimate honour. That is recognition in itself. We've done our job if we can encourage young girls to start a band."

"Therefore everyone gets an invitation to be the next member of Haim."

Grammy Nod

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently reeling from the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammys – with Haim the pioneering female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the announcements every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is read out," says Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor is deeply felt by the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "Yet we're just grateful for the women that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record was born from a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music explores that odd liminal space where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to let go.

The words track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the specific love they've had. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they want to be.

"I love way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is essentially a mantra. You have to consciously practice shutting out the criticism and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Style

That recent resilience called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I am so passionate about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," jokes Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the right drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's openness shaped the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic horror stories.

One man broke up with Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's therapeutic."

A Secure Legacy

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more certain of their position in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with chart-topping albums and an international fan base.

However the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've made it and we're still going strong."
