The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer displayed remarkable composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense play-off after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight feet to clinch the win, echoing his only previous Rolex Series success at the 2020 Scottish Open, which was likewise a play-off victory over Fleetwood.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Denmark’s Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

Fleetwood moved one shot ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.

Playoff Climax

That set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class golfer and an even more person. To play with him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
