El Kaabi's Breathtaking Strike Secures The Atlas Lions' Win Against Comoros in Africa Cup of Nations First Game.
Host nation Morocco shook off a anxious beginning to overcome their island opponents in the competition's inaugural fixture on Sunday, with goals from Brahim Díaz and super-sub Ayoub El Kaabi in the latter period.
It was a less than dominant showing, though, from the strongly favored Moroccans, who are ranked 97 places higher than the tiny island nation in the FIFA rankings and were forced to grind out for the points in wet conditions at Rabat's national stadium.
Tense Start and Missed Chances
Morocco failed to convert an early spot-kick and were locked at 0-0 at the interval even with controlling possession, finally breaking the deadlock in the 55th minute.
It came when full-back Mazraoui showed great skill to keep the ball in play before laying it square for Díaz to sidefoot into the net.
“The opening game is invariably tough but we came good in the second half,” commented manager Regragui.
The Substitute's Piece of Brilliance
The tension was subsequently eased by a piece of pure genius from Ayoub El Kaabi. Only 10 minutes after coming on, the forward met a cross with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, doubling and ensuring the win.
Before that, the hosts might have taken the lead in the 11th minute when a penalty was given for a challenge on Díaz. However, Rahimi's penalty was saved by keeper Yannick Pandor.
Comoros Defiant Stand and Second-Half Opportunity
The underdogs stoutly defended against Morocco for long periods until the hosts' individual talent eventually told.
Shot-stopper Yannick Pandor made several further fine saves to keep down the scoreline as the match progressed, although Comoros did have a chance for an equaliser shortly after Díaz's goal, with Rafiki Saïd shooting directly into Morocco goalkeeper Bounou.
Fitness Worry for Hosts
The three points was somewhat overshadowed by an injury to Morocco's skipper, Romain Saïss, who limped off in the 18th minute in some distress.
This defender had just returned to the international setup last month after a year’s absence due to a serious ankle operation.
This result continues Morocco's record-breaking run of consecutive victories to nineteen, surpassing the previous best of 15 set by Spain between 2008 and 2009.
